At the end of the Civil War, a colonel hunts down a man with whom he has a grudge.

Water Man: Go as you wish. That which is yours will always return to you. That which you take will always be taken from you.
Madame Louise Fair: Spoken like a true sinner.
Gideon: Well, hell, don't matter much out here.
Madame Louise Fair: Man's got to do what a man's got to do, right?
Gideon: What do you want?
Carver: I thought that would have been obvious the way I've been shootin' at ya.
Gideon: Your sister, she don't take kindly to thieving. There's plenty of time for that when you grow up.
Little Brother: Afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to stop walking.
Gideon: Let me be, boy. Best just go on back up to your kin.
Little Brother: Mister, I never shot nobody in the back before. So it's best you just turn around, and you get what's coming to you.
Gideon: Boy, now you put that gun up and go on.
Little Brother: Turn around.
Gideon: [turns and throws knife into Virgils' neck. Virgil falls off his horse. Gideon bends down and pulls out the knife] You're a fool, boy.
[whips blood off his knife onto his victim]
Gideon: I told you too let me be
Hayes: Reckon we ought to camp somewheres else?
Carver: Afraid the word of God will spoil your digestion?
Hayes: I never was much for scripture.
Carver: Nothing to fear, Mr. Hayes. Them's just words. Ain't no God out here.
Carver: Son, nobody can protect nobody in this world. The sooner you realize that, the better.
Gideon: Time was, you said your war was over.
Carver: Only the dead can know the end of war, Captain.
The Kid: He must be part Indian or wolf. Eat a man like that.
Hayes: He didn't eat him. Go.
[last lines]
Carver: [at gunpoint] Go on, finish it.
Gideon: [handing gun to him] I believe it's up to you, sir.
Carver: [barely audible] Rose. Rose.
Gideon: [gives him water and some for himself] Come on...
Gideon: [looks at emptied money pouch] No wonder you don't talk much. Too busy thieving.
Hayes: Say, how'd you come by that scar on your neck? Indians? Them savages?
Minister: No, it was worse. Mormons. Praise be to God and a good rifle, he answered my prayers and not his.
Hayes: You ought to have a talk with your God about that. Figure he ought to be more careful. You being the chosen folk and all.
Gideon: Why are you doing this?
Carver: Seraphim Falls.
Carver: If you kill this son of a bitch, it will not be paid. Extremities only!
The Kid: How do you write "wife"?
Hayes: Kid, that's W-H-O-R-E. Don't much matter how you spell it, a woman ain't gonna be yours unless you're paying her for the night. You pay her to be sweet to you, kid, that's all. Don't never mix up money and love.
Madame Louise Fair: You men, you always choosing a gun over a remedy.
[first lines]
Hayes: Well, we definitely got I'm. I wouldn't say gut shot, but got 'im pretty good.
Pope: He didn't even take his rifle. Horse run off though.
Hayes: It's cleared up some. Why don't we get a move on.
Carver: Let him bleed...
